Louis Vuitton’s Barizilian Fantasy

Rio De Janerio served as a perfect backdrop to Louis Vuitton’s 2017 cruise collection designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director of womenswear at Louis Vuitton. ”In Rio de Janeiro, what I saw most of all was movement and an explosive energy that lives somewhere between modernism and tropicality,” noted Ghesquiere about Rio’s influence on the line. “I was fascinated by the constant duality between nature and urbanism and the pictorial explosion it creates.”

Ghesquière a lover of architecture, chose an architectural wonder, The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and built in the 1990s – a white flying saucer that has touched down on the tip of a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea about an hour’s drive from the centre of Rio.

The designer’s sporty, fluid, modernist collection, with its bold accents and quaint nostalgic touches, was custom-made for the modernist landscape from which it emerged: the giant red ramp that transports visitors upwards to the museum was reborn as a magnificent crimson catwalk.

An element of sport, an athleticism imbedded in the collection, reflecting ease and comfort for a woman who is going places. Zippered dresses, colorful layering, laceups that resembled flip flops and neoprene boots clearly conveyed comfort is key. Local artist, Aldemir Martins’ paintings of Pelè adorned some tank tops.

The natural ease and realism of this collection with the edginess of zippers and leather appeals to me. The vibrant colors echo Brazil, beautifully put together and accessorized right.

A joyous marriage of Vuitton and Rio, style and comfort, french fashion luxury house with the colours of Brazil, and celebrities including the French icon Catherine Deneuve, the Swedish Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, Jaden (son of Will) Smith, and Adriana Lima proved to be beautiful chaos as Ghesquière put it, “Nature is explosive here, and at the same time you have these wonderful buildings. It’s a beautiful chaos.”
